Christmas Candle
From LoveToKnow Christmas
Lighting a Christmas candle is a way many people choose to celebrate the holiday and decorate their homes. A plethora of candles is available to choose from, from those with religious references to simple decorative home accents.
Religious Significance of a Christmas Candle
Candles are often used in religious ceremonies or at home to remind Christians of their faith during this special time of year. The most frequent way this is done is to use a wreath. Four candles, usually three purple and one pink, are placed in the wreath. During Advent (the weeks leading to Christmas), one candle is lit during church services. On Christmas day, a large center candle, often white or possibly gold, is lit in the middle, signifying Christ’s birth.
Advent candles can also be purchased for use in the home. You can make your own wreath of candles similar to the ones used in your church, or purchase a single candle meant to be burned to mark the passing of days or weeks until Christmas.
Decorative Candles
Using a Christmas candle can really dress up your home for the season. Candles make great centerpieces for a holiday dinner or buffet. Use a small wreath adorned with holly, berries, pine combs, and even some silver or white spray (to simulate snow), and place it around a large center candle in a color that fits your scheme.
A taper candle display can also be used to brighten up a home. Place a group together for additional lighting in one area, or use several groups as your main light in your home during a party. Purchase several lengths of tapered candles and scatter them down a buffet table for a different effect.
Christmas candles can also be placed in wreaths. However, make sure you keep a close eye on these, as it can be a potential fire hazard when left unattended.
The Christmas candle can be purchased scented. Popular scents for candles during the holidays include:
- Pine
- Bayberry
- Holly
- Mistletoe
- Cranberry
- Vanilla
- Gingerbread
Some Christmas candles even come in layered scents, where you burn down the first part of the candle, scented pine, to reach the second, scented cherry, etc. These are popular gifts to give during the holidays.
Giving Candles as a Gift
Giving a Christmas candle as a gift is a wonderful way to recognize someone special in your life. Not only is it a good “generic” gift for those you do not know well, but for a true candle lover, you can find specially designed or personalized candles.
Keeping several designs of Christmas candles on hand help with people who “drop by” with presents for you when you were not expecting to exchange gifts. Candles are always useful and appreciated. Store a variety of scents in several sizes. Wrap them up in colored tissue paper or cellophane bags. Tie with a ribbon and add a small item like berries or bells to dress up the candle. These are also good gifts for teachers, co-workers, or gift exchanges with a price limitation.
If you are looking for a candle or candle accessories for a close friend, keep their tastes in mind. Do they like shaped candles, which are meant to be displayed, not burned? What is their favorite scent? You may want to get them a personalized candle that can be used year after year.
Making your own candles is a great way to avoid the malls and give someone a gift from the heart. If you have a lot of gifts to give, this is also economical.
