Shop Early

Does Great-Aunt Martha really need another Clapper? Is there a good chance of your sister in law regifting that Chia Pet? Before rushing out at the last minute to purchase a Christmas gift, take the time to choose one the recipient is sure to enjoy. Nothing is worse than waking on Christmas morning and opening a truly awful gift. People can usually tell which gifts were purchased in haste. When you take the time to buy something reflective of the recipient’s personality, she’ll be touched by the gift as well as the gesture.

Money is No Object

Never set out shopping with a price in mind rather than a gift. A common mistake many people make is choosing the Christmas gift costing the most money. While the recipient is sure to appreciate your generosity, the gift may not be what he wanted at all. An expensive sweater doesn’t do any good if it’s relegated to the back of the closet. Instead of looking for a gift in a specific price range, look for a gift reflective of the recipient’s taste and lifestyle, even if it costs significantly less.

Reflection of Lifestyle

What does the recipient do for fun or relaxation? A golfer might appreciate some golf lessons, a gift certificate towards membership at the local golf course or an unusual golf accessory. Someone who enjoys cooking or baking would no doubt love a cooking lesson at a local culinary school. A crafter would be overjoyed to receive a stash of crafting materials. Keep hobbies and interest in mind when choosing a Christmas gift.

Perform a Service

A Christmas gift doesn’t necessarily have to be wrapped in a pretty box. Someone who can’t get around as well as she used to would love to be taken shopping or out to dinner. Your occupation may be the perfect Christmas gift. If you clean houses for a living, offer a free house cleaning to someone who doesn’t have time to give her home a good going over. If you’re a massage therapist, give a weekly or month back rub, and if you’re a chef, offer a few home cooked meals. Landscapers can plant flowers and mow lawns. Accountants can do income taxes. In fact, there’s no limit to services one can perform!

Homemade Christmas Gift

Parent and grandparents will be especially touched to receive a handmade Christmas gift. Best of all, the options are endless. It can be a treasured Christmas ornament or a keepsake box made from popsicle sticks. It can knitted, crocheted, cross stitched or scrapbooked, as long as it came from the heart.

Choosing Clothes

If you’ll be purchasing clothes for people on your list, try not to grab items blindly off the racks in hopes of getting your shopping over with. First ask yourself, “Is this something he’ll wear?” Don’t shop in the juniors department for a 40 year old and stay away from the misses department when looking for items for a teenager. Before you hit the mall, bring a list of sizes with you. Who wants to run out after the holidays are over to return gifs?.

It's the Thought

Christmas is a special time. For most, it’s not about the gifts but about spending time with loved ones. Nothing can put a damper on that more than a thoughtless gift. Start your list early in the year. If you’re browsing the aisles in July and see something perfect for someone on your list, get it. Don’t wait until December. Knowing someone took the time to find something perfect for you can be the best gift of all.
