Christmas Parade Float Ideas

From LoveToKnow Christmas

Coming up with Christmas parade float ideas year after year can be challenging, even for the most creative holiday parade float committees.

Children of all ages love unique Christmas parade floats.

Brainstorming Big Christmas Ideas

Even if your group has a committee devoted to working on the Christmas parade float, it can be helpful to get ideas from the entire group. At your group’s meeting in the fall, open the floor up to brainstorming float ideas.

Have someone, like the secretary, take notes on everything that is suggested. Ideas that may seem outlandish could lead to the most creative idea of them all with a little extra thought. People can suggest a theme or actual float decorations, depending on your needs. Regardless, the process of brainstorming results in getting more people involved in choosing a float idea and provides extra insight into the holiday theme.

Christmas Parade Float Idea Suggestions

If you are the committee in charge of the parade, you may want to come up with an overall Christmas parade theme. This could be a catch phrase or just something each float needs to include, like a Santa figure or Frosty the Snowman.

Float entries in parades without an overall theme should still try to come up with unique ideas. These ideas could relate back to the group’s purpose or simply be about the Christmas holiday. Get started with planning with these Christmas parade float ideas:

  • Christmas of Decades Past: Celebrate the way your ancestors used to by showcasing scenes from a wild west Christmas, Victorian Christmas traditions or a World War II era Christmas celebration.
  • North Pole: How do you imagine the North Pole looks? Feature a miniature village, Santa's workshop or even the reindeer barn with Rudolph on your float.
  • Revving Up for Christmas: Turn your vehicle into a float. Motorcycles, ATVs, classic cars/trucks and even a horse-drawn carriage can all be decorated for the holidays.
  • Holiday Symbols: Besides Santa Claus, what other figures get attention around the holiday? Candy canes, gingerbread houses, bells, churches, Christmas trees, wreaths and stockings are all common icons of the holiday. Build a float with one of these symbols as your inspiration.
  • Father Christmas: Whether you call him Father Christmas or Santa Claus, the charitable old man with the white beard has become a Christmas symbol around the world. Depict a particular country or region's take on the generous gift-giving figure.
  • Christmas Carols: Think about your favorite holiday tune. What would it look like if it was live? Use a portable CD-player and play the song on your float as you depict a classic Christmas carol's first verse or chorus.
  • Tropical Holidays: People who live in cold climates can only image what a holiday would look like in a tropical location. Bring this vision to life on your parade float, complete with sand, palm trees and Santa himself!
  • Poinsettia Parade: The poinsettia is a traditional Christmas flower for many people in the United States, so use it throughout your parade decorations. Create a tree of poinsettia blooms or cover the back of the float in the pretty red and green flowers.

Even if you all ready know your parade's overall theme, such as a lighted Christmas parade, it is still imperative to begin planning your float design early. This gives you plenty of time to raise money for supplies, draw out a design and meet to put the float together. While it is possible to put together a float in just a few weeks, you should start coming up with your ideas several months ahead of time.

Start planning your next Christmas parade float ideas well in advance of the actual parade. Whether you are on the parade committee looking for an overall theme for the floats or in a group entering a float into a parade, get ideas from everyone early in the planning stages. This way, you will continue to excite children of all ages with the innovative float designs every holiday season.
