Specialty Tree Storage

Containers, duffels, totes and bags are available for storing Christmas trees. Features vary from brand to brand, depending on the tree size. Special containers may include features not readily available from simple storage boxes, such as:

  • Rolling wheels for easy transport to and from storage area
  • Collapsible sides for storing while tree is up
  • Compartments for ornaments, lights and toppers
  • Handles for easy carrying
  • Choice of soft sides or hard sides

Decorated Tree Storage

Most of the solutions listed require the tree be cleared of ornaments and taken apart. People who want to keep their decorations on the tree intact need to have both the room to store the tree upright and the proper case for storing it. Without the case, ornaments, ribbons and Christmas lights will get dusty, making the tree hard to clean. Kits like the TreeKeeper PRO, include rolling stands, storage bag and tree skirt in one handy unit.

Buy Storage Solutions

Tree storage solutions can be purchased in the holiday decorating section of many retailers. They are also available from specialty Christmas stores and online:

Original Packaging Storage

Repacking trees can be a hassle.
Repacking trees can be a hassle.

Depending on the size of the tree and a person’s handiness with packing in general, it is possible to reuse the original packaging for storing a holiday tree. This is a cheap and efficient solution. However, problems with using the original packing often make it difficult to reuse the box the tree came in. Keep these tips in mind if considering using the original packing box and materials for Christmas tree storage:

  • Cut the box open carefully so small tears are not made in the seams.
  • Take photos of how the tree was boxed, making it easier to fit everything back the way it came.
  • Wrap tree branches in plastic bags, as cardboard boxes provide little protection against wetness.
  • Use zip-ties to keep branches tightly packed.

Using the original box works best for small tabletop Christmas trees. They require less effort to repack and often have just a few materials for cushioning.

Christmas Tree Storage Containers

Spending an obscene amount of money on a storage container that is designed for Christmas trees makes little sense in a season when money is tight. Yet, the original box may not be in any condition to reuse. Instead, pick up a plastic or rubber storage container that is for multi-purpose use.

The easiest way to find one that the tree will fit into is to purchase one at the same time of buying an artificial Christmas tree. Use the tree box as a comparison measure for a large storage container that will hold all of the tree parts.

Alternatively, trees can also be stored in multiple containers. Purchasing a new one is not necessary if several empty containers are around the house. Simply put as many tree parts into each bin. Use labels to keep track of what parts are in what bin. Store them all together, making sure to number the boxes. Be sure to write “box 4/5” if there are five total boxes stored, instead of just “box 4.” Otherwise, no one will know how many boxes there are total.

Unlike live Christmas trees, artificial ones need to be kept looking their best for several years. The proper storage can maintain the faux vitality longer than simply throwing the tree in the back of the closet.
