Christmas Wreath

From LoveToKnow Christmas

Placing a Christmas wreath outside your doorway is a signal to family and friends that you welcome them to your home during the holidays. A long-running tradition, it is a simple way to decorate both outside and inside during December.

Real Christmas Wreaths

Getting a wreath made of real pine needles is simple. Most Christmas tree shops carry an assortment of sizes. Discount and grocery stores often have their wreaths outside the entrance.

Check with local groups you enjoy supporting; wreaths are a great fundraiser during the holidays season. Boy Scouts, church youth groups, PTAs and other groups often sell real wreaths in November and will deliver them after Thanksgiving.

Real Christmas wreaths can also be ordered online.

A Christmas wreath made of natural materials is usually hung outside. This is because needles can fall off the wreath, making it messy to clean indoors. Wreaths are durable and can withstand wind and cold. Outdoor wreaths often have few decorations, due to the climate conditions. Usually, a large red bow is in the center. Some wreaths have holly or berries added, while some people choose to string lights through the wreath.

Artificial Wreaths

Artificial wreaths are best for indoor use. Usually made of plastic, they can be purchased from discount stores, department stores, or boutiques. When purchased “plain” or with only a bow, they can be dressed up to match your décor or personality. Ideas on ways to add character to your indoor wreath include:

  • Wiring small presents to the wreath in your color scheme.
  • Making additional bows and placing around the wreath.
  • Placing fake birds (such as cardinals) in the wreath.
  • Hanging favorite holiday ornaments around the wreath.
  • Decorating it for baby’s first Christmas.
  • Adding a Santa and reindeer around the wreath.
  • Placing religious symbols such as crosses on the wreath.
  • Adding hobby ornaments to the wreath, like miniature motorcycles or purses/shoes.

Using an artificial wreath is also economical. You can wrap, box, and store the wreath for use over several years, and easily change any decorations to suit your mood or theme for the next year.

Artificial wreaths do not always come in the traditional pine needle look. Lots of variations are done on the wreath. Some wreaths are made of glass or crystal. Others are made up of only ornaments or present boxes. This is a good option for people who want a wreath in their home, but do not like or want the look of tree boughs. New versions of the traditional Christmas wreath appear each year.

Other Fun Things to do with Wreaths

Wreaths are not just for decorations. You can do a lot with the wreath shape. Animal lovers might like to make a bird or squirrel feeder to place outside in the winter. These can be made with a ring of corn on the cob wired together, slathered in peanut butter and rolled in bird seed. Or, try your hand at something a little more difficult like the bird feeder wreath described here.

You can also make your food into a Christmas wreath shape. Instead of a plain round pizza, make it into a wreath. Place pepperoni on it to look like bulbs. Take a popcorn ball mix and shape it into a wreath instead of a ball. Use green food coloring to dye the ingredients, and then draw a bow on the top with icing. An angel food cake is all ready wreath-shaped, so decorate it to look like one.

Make a wreath with your small candles around a larger centerpiece to add ambiance to the dinner table. You could also make mini-wreaths out of napkins and ribbons to tie silverware together.

The Christmas wreath is a festive way to decorate your home for the holidays. Find the wreath that fits into your home and make a cheery statement.
