The War on Christmas
From LoveToKnow Christmas
Jesus is the Reason for the Season
If you’re concerned that religious celebrations of the Christmas holiday seem to be overshadowed by secular observances, then The War on Christmas: How the Liberal Plot to Ban the Sacred Christian Holiday Is Worse Than You Thought should top your reading list this holiday season.
The Premise Behind The War on Christmas
The idea behind The War on Christmas: How the Liberal Plot to Ban the Sacred Christian Holiday Is Worse Than You Thought is that people are pushing away all religious observances associated with Christmas in an attempt to avoid being seen as politically incorrect. According to The War on Christmas: How the Liberal Plot to Ban the Sacred Christian Holiday Is Worse Than You Thought, this effort to be inclusive is effectively alienating those who consider Christmas to be an important celebration of Christianity.
In addition to the refusal of many retailers to include the words “Merry Christmas” in their holiday advertisements, examples of anti-Christmas behavior cited in the book include:
- In Rhode Island, Christians were not allowed to participate in a public project to decorate the City Hall for Christmas.
- School officials in New Jersey banned all traditional Christmas carols, including the instrumental versions.
- In Arizona, students were forbidden to refer to the religious history of Christmas in their class projects.
- Government employees in Illinois weren’t allowed to say “Merry Christmas” while at work, for fear they would offend non-Christians.
About the Author
John Gibson, author of The War on Christmas: How the Liberal Plot to Ban the Sacred Christian Holiday Is Worse Than You Thought, is the host of The Big Story on Fox News Channel. Before hosting The Big Story, Mr. Gibson worked as a reporter and anchor for MSNBC, CNBC, and NBC News.
In addition to writing The War on Christmas: How the Liberal Plot to Ban the Sacred Christian Holiday Is Worse Than You Thought, Mr. Gibson is also the author of Hating America: The New World Sport. Published in 2004, this book examines the anti-American backlash that surfaced with a vengeance over the war in Iraq.
Controversy
While The War on Christmas: How the Liberal Plot to Ban the Sacred Christian Holiday Is Worse Than You Thought is a popular book among ultra-conservative Republicans, it’s attracted plenty of critics. Several reviewers have claimed the book uses faulty logic and propaganda to convince readers of a “war” that doesn’t actually exist. They claim that the anti-Christmas efforts sited by Mr. Gibson are actually just an attempt to promote diversity in America.
If you haven’t made up your mind yet, it’s worth pointing out that the “war” on Christmas has been around for quite some time. As early as 1959, writers such as Hubert Kregeloh were attempting to convince their readers of a conspiracy to “to take the Christ out of Christmas.”
